June 21st is the longest day of the year in our hemisphere for the single day with the most sunshine! So be careful outside and watch out for sunburn! Use lots of skin protection and wear a hat if you\u2019re going to be outside.<\/p>\n<p>Summer weather has been a curiosity for hundreds of years. Scientists of old were always fiddling with one scientific invention or another to better help us judge weather! Many of our current weather gauges are hundreds of years old, and not much has changed with these basic inventions since the original inventor came up with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Galileo Galilei<\/strong> was one of many inventors who came up with the modern invention of the <strong>thermometer<\/strong>. The scientist of old used various ways to tell the temperature and used Mercury or Alcohol in the glass tube.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Barometer<\/strong> measures air pressure; low pressure usually means we\u2019re in for some rain, whereas high pressure ensures clear skies. This was especially helpful to farmers. <strong>Evangelista Torricelli<\/strong> is historically credited with the invention of the Barometer. Wind velocity was an additional concern and how to measure it.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong>\u00a0Anemometer<\/strong> was invented in 1450 by <strong>Leon Battista Alberti<\/strong> with cups on a\u00a0wheel in a circle so that he could measure\u00a0the speed and, thus, judge how fast\u00a0the wind was blowing. We see Anemometers\u00a0on many rooftops in cities as\u00a0well as in farm and agriculture areas.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>Hygrometer<\/strong> is used to measure\u00a0moisture content. <strong>Francesco\u00a0Folli<\/strong> invented a practical hygrometer in\u00a01664. The first one was built by <strong>Leonardo\u00a0da Vinci<\/strong> in the 1400s\u00a0(he was one smart dude!)<\/p>\n<p>Of course, with the\u00a0current modern system\u00a0of weather radars all over\u00a0the USA (100 and counting)\u00a0we do not need many of these old tried\u00a0and true weather gauges. Our current\u00a0radar system sends out microwave\u00a0pulses and indicates rain, snow, and\u00a0how hard these things are falling to give\u00a0the weather folks a real good idea of\u00a0current conditions almost anywhere in\u00a0North America.
